FCC Authorizes SpaceX to Deploy 7,500 Additional Starlink Satellites
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted SpaceX authorization to launch an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites, bringing the total approved constellation to 15,000 satellites globally. This decision, announced Friday, marks a critically important expansion for SpaceX’s high-speed internet service and introduces new capabilities for satellite connectivity.
Beyond increasing internet coverage, the FCC’s approval allows Starlink satellites to operate across five distinct frequencies. Critically, the authorization also enables these satellites to provide direct-to-cell connectivity, initially focusing on areas outside the United States, while simultaneously offering supplemental coverage within the U.S. This expanded functionality promises to extend mobile network access to previously underserved regions.
SpaceX initially requested approval for 15,000 additional satellites; however,the FCC has deferred authorization for the remaining 7,488 proposed Gen2 Starlink satellites. the agency has stipulated that SpaceX must launch 50% of the approved 7,500 satellites by December 1,2028,and the remaining half by December 2031. These deadlines ensure the timely deployment of the expanded constellation and the realization of its promised benefits.
