The Spanish women’s national football team is proceeding with a crucial World Cup qualifying match against Ukraine in Antalya, Türkiye, despite expressing concerns over regional security. The decision follows a request to UEFA to relocate the match due to escalating tensions stemming from conflict in the broader region, a request that was ultimately denied.

Security Concerns and UEFA’s Decision

Spain initially requested that UEFA not schedule the match in Türkiye, citing fears related to the ongoing conflict in Iran and a recent Iranian missile intercepted in Ottoman territory . However, UEFA maintained the fixture, assuring the team that security measures were in place. Failure to travel risked a forfeit, resulting in the loss of vital qualifying points and potential further sanctions.

Team Decision and Travel Arrangements

After a meeting involving players, coaching staff, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) leadership, the team agreed to travel to Türkiye. RFEF President Rafael Luzán accompanied the team on a charter flight, an unusual step for a qualifying match, demonstrating the federation’s support. A planned press conference in Türkiye was cancelled following the flight’s arrangements.

AFE Union Concerns

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) voiced its opposition to the trip, emphasizing that the safety and integrity of the players should be the top priority . The AFE warned that areas near the conflict could be potential missile targets and that airspace closures could leave the team stranded.

Limited Stay and Security Measures

The Spanish team is minimizing its time in Türkiye, arriving on March 6th and planning to depart immediately after the match. Upon arrival, the team was met by the Spanish ambassador and received assurances regarding enhanced security measures, according to Spanish coach Sonia Bermúdez.
