Spain’s national baseball team is leaning heavily on Cuban-born stars as it chases a direct berth to the 2027 Premier12, a critical milestone on the qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Camp Municipal Showdown in Barcelona
Pelota Cubana reported that the tournament opens at the Camp Municipal de Béisbol Carlos Pérez de Rozas in Barcelona, bringing together Spain, Italy, Germany, and Colombia in a round-robin format. The top two finishers secure a direct berth to the 2027 tournament. Play begins with Spain facing Germany, followed by matchups against Italy and Colombia, with all games scheduled for 19:00 local time.
Rankings Defied by a Proven Framework
As the host nation, Spain enters the tournament ranked 26th in the WBSC world rankings, trailing Colombia at 13th, Italy at 14th, and Germany at 17th. Despite the ranking gap, the host team relies on a proven recruitment framework built around residency, ancestry, and passport eligibility that has steadily elevated the program’s competitive standing in Europe.
A Record-Setting Cuban Contingent
The squad features nine Cuban-born players and one coach, representing the largest concentration of such talent in a Spanish national team to date. This surpasses the six players who featured in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in February 2025.
Catcher Omar Hernández, who serves as team captain, leads the group alongside fellow outfielders Félix Stevens and Frank Hernández. The pitching staff features Elián Leyva, Pablo Luis Guillén, Royd Hernández, Rubén Menes, Dayán González, and Carlos Sierra, while Néstor Pérez rounds out the group as part of the coaching staff.
Cuban Players Bring International Experience to Spain
Several members of this contingent carry extensive domestic and international experience. Omar Hernández arrived in Spain from Havana in 2013 alongside his twin brother Frank, developing through Club Béisbol Viladecans before signing with the Kansas City Royals in 2018 as the club’s first player to ink a Major League Baseball franchise deal. During the 2023 European Championship, he led the tournament in runs scored and home runs, posting a 1.397 OPS and four homers.

Pitcher Pablo Luis Guillén, originally from Villa Clara, anchored the starting rotation during Spain’s 2023 European title run and posted a 3-0 record with a 0.46 ERA and 0.73 WHIP over 19.2 innings for Tenerife. Royd Hernández contributed a 4-1 record, 2.21 ERA, and 53 strikeouts across the 2024 season.
Spain Wins First Continental Title in 68 Years
This integration strategy delivered its most significant result at the 2023 European Championship in the Czech Republic, where Spain captured its first continental title in 68 years behind vital performances from its Cuban-born players.
While Cuba itself holds direct qualification to the 2027 Premier12 by virtue of its WBSC ranking and does not need to participate in the Barcelona qualifier, a successful Spanish campaign could set up a future meeting between the two national programs on the international stage.
