Global Box Office Update: ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘Sinners’ Lead, Animated Films Gain Traction

The global box office continues to demonstrate resilience, with Disney/Marvel’s Thunderbolts* leading the pack in its second weekend of release. According to estimates from Comscore, the film grossed $67.1 million worldwide from May 9-11, bringing its cumulative global earnings to $272.2 million. Warner Bros.’ Sinners followed closely behind with $27.7 million, reaching a total of $283.4 million globally.

‘Thunderbolts’ Performance Details

Thunderbolts* experienced a 55% drop in North American earnings and a 60% drop internationally, though Disney notes the international figure was inflated by extra days of play in many territories. Excluding China, the international drop was a milder 44%. As of the latest estimates, the film has earned $128.5 million in North America and $143.7 million internationally, totaling $272.2 million globally.

The United Kingdom/Ireland ($15.5m) has surpassed China ($13.8m) as the film’s largest international market, followed by Mexico ($11.2m), France ($7.2m), and Australia ($6.3m). Brazil ($6.3m), Japan ($6.2m), Germany ($5.9m), South Korea ($5.8m), Italy and Spain (both $4.4m), and Indonesia ($3.6m) also contribute significantly to the film’s international success.

Animated Films Show Strength

A Minecraft Movie continues to perform strongly, reaching $909.6 million globally. Like Goats, distributed by Sony Pictures, debuted with $979,300 and shows promise as a family-friendly alternative to Zootropolis 2. Sony currently has three films in the top 10, including There and Back and Escape Route.
