Sparks, Nevada – A male bicyclist remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Jose Amaya of Sparks, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm.
Details of the Incident
According to a Sparks Police news release, the incident occurred at approximately 3:02 a.m. In the area of Prater Way and View Street. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.
Police located the vehicle, a black Cadillac Escalade, and the driver in the 1800 block of El Rancho Drive in Sparks. Jose Amaya was subsequently arrested and booked into the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges Filed Against Jose Amaya
Amaya faces the following charges:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in substantial bodily harm
- Duty to stop at the scene of a crash involving death or personal injury (hit-and-run)
- Proof of financial responsibility (insurance)
- Suspended vehicle registration
- Fail to maintain travel lane
- Operating a motor vehicle without a court-ordered breath interlock device
Investigation and Road Closure
