Sparta and Mladá Boleslav Swap Tomáš Hyka for Vojtěch Hradec

HC Sparta Praha and BK Mladá Boleslav have finalized a player swap, with veteran forward Tomáš Hyka moving to Mladá Boleslav while young center Vojtěch Hradec joins the Prague-based club. The deal marks the first trade of the current Tipsport Extraliga season, as both teams look to address roster deficiencies following underwhelming starts to their campaigns.

Experienced Forward Tomáš Hyka Returns to Mlada Boleslav

Tomáš Hyka, 33, returns to his hometown club after spending the last three seasons with Sparta. According to iDNES.cz, Hyka’s role and productivity in Prague had declined, with the winger recently relegated to the fourth line. Despite ending a 24-game goal drought against České Budějovice, the club opted to move the former NHL player to satisfy the coaching staff’s desire for tactical changes.

Mladá Boleslav’s management views the acquisition as a necessary boost for their struggling power play. "We needed experience, which we gain in Tomáš," said Mladá Boleslav sports director Tomáš Vlasák, as reported by Sport.cz. The club’s sports manager, Martin Ševc, added that they specifically required a right-handed shooter to improve their conversion rate on the man advantage.

Sparta Adds Youth and Size in Vojtěch Hradec

In exchange for Hyka, Sparta acquired 21-year-old center Vojtěch Hradec. Sparta head coach Patrik Augusta, who previously coached Hradec during their time with the national junior team, requested the move to add physical presence and defensive reliability to his center rotation.

"Vojta is a talented young player with excellent physical parameters for the center position," Augusta stated via HC Sparta. "He is good at defensive tasks, faceoffs, and penalty killing." Hradec, an NHL draft pick by the Utah Hockey Club, has recorded 125 Extraliga appearances. While he was limited to five games this season due to injury, Sparta management expressed confidence that the transition will allow the young forward to reach his full potential under familiar coaching.

Strategic Motivations Behind the Trade

The trade reflects the contrasting needs of the two clubs. Sparta, currently ninth in the standings with 10 points, sought to shake up their lineup after an inconsistent start. Sportovní ředitel (Sports Director) Tomáš Divíšek explained that the club had been in communication with the coaching staff to identify necessary adjustments, noting that the trade was intended to benefit both the team and the players involved.

For Mladá Boleslav, currently sitting in 13th place with six points, the move is an attempt to address their status as one of the league’s lowest-scoring teams. By trading away a power-forward in Hradec, the club is banking on Hyka’s proven scoring touch to revitalize an offense that has produced only 18 goals in the opening weeks of the season.

Hyka Leaves Prague While Hradec Joins Sparta

  • Tomas Hyka: The veteran departs Prague after 159 games for Sparta. In a statement released by HC Sparta, Hyka expressed gratitude to the fans and organization, noting that he carries both fond memories and lessons from his time in the capital.
  • Vojtech Hradec: For the young center, this marks his first professional move away from his home club. He told Sport.cz that he is highly motivated and eager to contribute to Sparta’s success immediately.

Why Sparta Released Tomáš Hyka for Vojtěch Hradec?

Why did Sparta release an experienced player like Tomáš Hyka?
Sparta’s sports management indicated that the coaching staff required a shift in team composition after a disappointing start to the season. While the club thanked Hyka for his work ethic, they prioritized acquiring a younger, physically imposing center like Hradec to improve defensive depth and faceoff success.

What specific role is Vojtěch Hradec expected to fill in Prague?
Coach Patrik Augusta plans to utilize Hradec as a versatile center who can contribute to penalty killing and defensive assignments. Augusta’s prior experience coaching Hradec during the junior world championships suggests the player will be tasked with providing reliable, two-way play in the middle of the lineup.

How does this trade impact Mladá Boleslav’s power play?
Mladá Boleslav management identified a lack of right-handed shooters as a primary weakness in their power-play units. By bringing in Hyka, who is a natural right-hand shot and an established goal-scorer, they aim to improve their efficiency in man-advantage situations.
