Thirty Italian-American youths from across the United States recently completed a ten-day immersive cultural stay in Spilinga, Italy, experiencing daily village life, local traditions, and Mediterranean cooking to strengthen ties with their heritage, according to local municipal reporting. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader push to expand into roots and experiential tourism.
Roots Tourism Initiative Brings Italian-Americans to Spilinga
According to municipal reports, the group of 30 participants arrived as part of an outreach effort involving the Italian American Future Leaders (IAFL) organization. Rather than sticking exclusively to conventional tourist hubs along the Costa degli Dei, the visitors stayed in local village apartments. Their daily schedule included shared meals, neighborhood walks, village social gatherings, and popular festivals alongside permanent residents.
While the itinerary featured regional landmarks such as Tropea and Capo Vaticano, a significant portion of the program centered directly on Spilinga’s cultural traditions, music, and folk dances like the tarantella. Local officials noted that the project originated after Deputy Mayor Franco Barbalace presented Spilinga’s heritage during an annual IAFL meeting in Florida. Carlo Piccolo, a delegate for the IAFL, directly coordinated the program details on-site alongside municipal leaders.
Culinary Traditions and Agro-Food Heritage
Food and agricultural education served as core components of the ten-day itinerary. According to local reporting, the students participated in a three-lesson culinary program at the International Academy of Mediterranean Cuisine, led by Director Corrado Rossi. The classes focused on traditional Italian and Mediterranean cooking techniques, emphasizing the cultural value of shared meals.
The participants also toured Monte Poro to examine regional agricultural production, specifically focusing on the manufacturing of Pecorino del Poro cheese. Deputy Mayor Barbalace stated that the municipality aims to integrate Spilinga deeper into experiential tourism circuits, though he noted that expanding local lodging capacity remains a key infrastructure goal to accommodate future visitors sustainably.

Spilinga Mayor Enzo Marasco and representatives from the Pro Loco welcomed the delegation during a formal municipal meeting.
Participants expressed enthusiasm for the immersive format. According to municipal sources, visiting youths described the trip as an “authentic Italian experience” that made them feel “instantly at home,” with several noting that the genuine hospitality of the residents surpassed material sightseeing. Village leaders plan to explore a formalized, permanent partnership with the IAFL, which could potentially include reciprocal exchange opportunities for Spilinga residents to travel to the United States.
