Spotify is testing “Talk to Spotify,” a new AI-powered chatbot that allows users to control music playback and manage libraries through natural language conversations.

Conversational Control and Library Management

The “Talk to Spotify” interface appears on the mobile app’s home screen and within the “Now Playing” view. Users can prompt the chatbot to find new artists or refine their current selection by requesting more tracks from a specific musician or focusing on their most recent releases. According to Spotify, the bot can save songs to playlists upon a voice or text command.

The chatbot also functions as an information layer for the content being streamed. It can provide details on the inspiration behind a specific song or identify books written by a podcast guest. Users can also query their own data, such as asking the AI which genres they have preferred recently.

Integration of Large Language Models (LLMs)

Spotify has not disclosed the specific Large Language Model (LLM) powering the chatbot, though the company notes it uses a mix of proprietary and third-party AI technology. In its beta documentation, Spotify warns that AI-generated responses may not always be accurate and relies on user feedback to refine the system’s performance.

This chatbot is part of a broader AI rollout. It follows the release of the AI DJ and prompt-based playlist creation. The company has also introduced a desktop-based AI podcast feature designed to convert calendar and note contents into personalized spoken briefings.

AI Strategy and Music Industry Partnerships

While “Talk to Spotify” and other recent tools focus on the curation and consumption of existing media, Spotify is not using these specific features to generate new music. Instead, the company is coordinating with major music labels—including Sony, Universal, and Warner—to manage how AI is used in the creation of new songs. This collaboration includes the establishment of a dedicated music AI research lab.
