Springfield Public Schools Closed Tuesday Due to Cyber Incident

Springfield Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday after a cyber incident disrupted essential technology systems, district officials announced. The shutdown affects all schools and after-school activities in the Massachusetts district, marking at least the fourth similar cyber disruption to impact a Massachusetts school system in recent years.

Springfield Schools Shut Down

Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall stated in a social media announcement that the breach compromised services necessary for daily school operations.

“We understand that an unexpected closure creates significant challenges and we appreciate the patience, flexibility and understanding of the entire Springfield Public Schools community as we work to address this incident and restore systems,” Dinnall said.

Network Restrictions and Central Office Status

While the district’s central office remains open, officials warned that some services, including telephone lines, may experience disruptions.

Students utilizing district-issued laptops and all staff members have been instructed to stay off district network systems entirely until investigators determine the full size and scope of the security breach.

Administrators are using the closure to deploy backup plans for non-essential technology tools, such as attendance tracking, that may remain functional while technical teams investigate the core network.

“The decision to close schools is not made lightly,” Dinnall said. “The most important consideration will always be the health and safety of those inside our school buildings. We simply are not willing to risk any lapse in that.”

Growing Pattern of Massachusetts Cyber Attacks

This closure adds to a growing pattern of cyber attacks targeting educational institutions across Massachusetts.

In May, a nationwide security breach of the Canvas online assignment and exam portal impacted Needham Public Schools alongside several Boston-area colleges.
