St Nick’s secured a 2-14 to 1-13 victory over Kinsale in the McCarthy Group Insurance Premier Junior A Football quarter-final at Shanbally on Saturday, advancing to face Cobh in the semi-final for the second consecutive year.
Match Turning Points and First-Half Action
Goals on either side of halftime propelled the city side past their seaside opponents, though Kinsale spent the closing stages wondering how the result slipped away. Jack O’Sullivan opened the scoring for St Nick’s with two early frees before Gearoid Finn answered for Kinsale in the sixth minute. The momentum shifted firmly to Kinsale on 10 minutes when Michael Murphy was brought down in the square. Finn converted the resulting penalty, while Eoghan Varian received a black card for the foul.
Kinsale capitalized on the numerical advantage by adding three scores, highlighted by a two-point free from Brian Coughlan. Trailing by six points, Kinsale battled gamely down the stretch. They managed to trim the deficit by two points, but St Nick’s defense held firm to close out the win under referee Alan Hourihan of Aghinagh.
