St Patrick’s Athletic Secure Late Victory Over Galway United
Richmond Park witnessed a dramatic finish on Monday night as St Patrick’s Athletic defeated Galway United 1-0, thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Kian Leavy. The result lifts the Saints to second place in the League of Ireland Premier Division table.
Match Report
In a tightly contested match, Galway United proved to be a resilient opponent, frustrating St Patrick’s Athletic for much of the game. However, Leavy’s precise left-footed strike in the dying moments of the match secured all three points for the home side.
Stephen Kenny’s Reaction
St Patrick’s Athletic manager Stephen Kenny expressed his delight with the victory, emphasizing the significance of the goal for Kian Leavy. “I’m delighted. It’s a sense of joy, really, not relief,” Kenny told RTÉ Sport. “For Kian, it’s been a phenomenal effort from him in pre-season and all the games. Sometimes that effort is not reflected in the number of goals.”
Kenny highlighted the importance of Leavy’s hard work and praised his composure in front of goal. “That’s been his area to work on and that was just an incredible goal really. In the 90th minute to run on like that and hit it first time and arrow it into the corner. It was a good way to win the game.”
The manager acknowledged the difficulty of breaking down Galway United’s defense. “Galway are difficult to break down. We hadn’t played very well in the first half but still had lot of the play. That wasn’t reflected in the number of clear-cut chances because they defended their box really well. They defended every cross and they’re very well organised.”
Impact of Max Mata
Kenny also praised the contribution of substitute Max Mata, who played a crucial role in the build-up to the winning goal. Mata chested the ball down to Jay McClelland, who then set up Leavy for the decisive strike. “Max obviously hadn’t played since last summer when we signed him of course. He was out long-term with a hamstring injury and he had a little setback in pre-season so we have to be careful with him,” Kenny explained. “We didn’t use him on Friday but we needed him tonight and he made a difference. He’s very intelligent, you can see that. He’s got great football intelligence and he certainly had an impact.”
League Standings
Following this victory, St Patrick’s Athletic move up to second place in the League of Ireland Premier Division, demonstrating their strong start to the season. The Irish Examiner noted that the win was deserved based on St Patrick’s dominance throughout the match.
