St. Petersburg College Launches Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Technology
In response to the rapid growth and development of the Tampa Bay region, St. Petersburg College (SPC) will launch a new Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Construction Technology in Fall 2026. The program is designed to address the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the construction industry and prepare graduates for leadership roles.
Addressing the Workforce Gap
The new BAS degree will focus on equipping students with the skills needed for positions such as project managers, superintendents, field engineers, cost estimators, and infrastructure technicians. According to Thomas R. Burket, President of PJ Callaghan Construction and chair of SPC’s Building Arts Advisory Committee, the program is a “critical step forward” in closing the skills gap and investing in the long-term sustainability of the industry. Curriculum and Industry Alignment
The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with local industry leaders to ensure it aligns closely with current workforce needs across Tampa Bay. Coursework will emphasize key areas including project management, adaptive reuse, coastal construction, and sustainable building practices. Darrell Carr, lead faculty for the bachelor’s program, notes a “mismatch between job seekers and hiring managers,” highlighting the need for professionals who can lead projects, coordinate teams, and deliver results. Building on Existing Programs and Certifications
The BAS degree builds upon SPC’s existing Associate in Science degree in Building Design and Construction Management and Associate in Arts transfer plans. Students will too have the opportunity to earn certificates in Sustainable Construction Technology and Field Survey Technician, as well as industry-recognized certifications such as OSHA 30 and the Association of General Contractors Certified Associate Constructor.
