UK Man Sentenced to Hospital Order After Stalking Social Media Influencer
A 40-year-old man from Horsham, West Sussex, has been issued a hospital order after a campaign of stalking and harassment directed at a social media influencer. According to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, the defendant, identified as Marc Moles, sent persistent sexual messages, made threats to kidnap the victim, and ultimately tracked her to Bali, Indonesia.
The sentencing took place at Lewes Crown Court in October 2024. Moles was handed a hospital order under the Mental Health Act after pleading guilty to stalking involving serious alarm or distress.
How the Stalking Campaign Escalated

The harassment began online, where Moles targeted the victim through her social media platforms. Investigators found that the defendant sent a high volume of unwanted sexual messages. The situation intensified when Moles began making specific threats to kidnap the influencer.
According to police records, the behavior moved from digital harassment to physical pursuit. Moles traveled to Bali, where the victim was staying, causing her to fear for her safety. The influencer reported the incident to authorities, leading to an investigation by Hampshire police, who coordinated with international counterparts to monitor the defendant’s movements.
Legal Consequences and the Hospital Order
The court determined that a hospital order was the appropriate sentence given the defendant’s mental health status. Under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act, a court may order a defendant to be detained in a hospital for medical treatment rather than sent to prison, provided that evidence from medical professionals supports the need for psychiatric care.
“This was a terrifying experience for the victim, whose life was significantly impacted by the defendant’s persistent and escalating actions,” said a spokesperson for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. The force emphasized that stalking is a serious criminal offense that can have long-lasting psychological effects on victims, regardless of whether the harassment occurs online or in person.
Why Stalking Cases Involving Influencers Present Unique Challenges

The case highlights the growing concern regarding the safety of public-facing social media users. Unlike traditional stalking cases, where the perpetrator may be an acquaintance, influencers often face risks from individuals they have never met.
* Digital Footprint: Perpetrators often use public posts to track a victim’s real-time location.
* Escalation: The transition from online harassment to physical proximity is a common pattern in high-profile stalking cases.
* Jurisdictional Hurdles: As seen in this case, the movement of both parties across international borders complicates evidence gathering and intervention.
Resources for Victims of Stalking
In the United Kingdom, support for victims of stalking is available through several specialized organizations. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust operates the National Stalking Helpline, which provides advice and guidance for those experiencing harassment. Experts recommend that victims document all instances of contact, including screenshots of messages and logs of unwanted calls, to assist law enforcement in building a case.
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or the police directly.
