Future of ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Remains Uncertain After Season 2 Wrap
Production on the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has officially concluded, but the series’ long-term future remains unclear. While cast and crew members have shared farewells as their work on the current season wraps, questions linger about a potential third season, complicated by shifts in leadership at Paramount and the integration of Skydance’s new streaming strategy.
Season 2 Finale: Not an End, But a Cliffhanger?
Filming for the 10-episode second season commenced last August, approximately six months after the completion of the first season. As the season draws to a close, showrunners Noga Landau and Gaia Violo have indicated they did not write the finale as a potential series end.
“Absolutely not. We have so much story to advise. If anything – yeah, it is not the end,” Landau told TrekMovie. Violo added that the season 2 finale is designed to be a “shocking ending” that leaves viewers wanting more, hinting at a cliffhanger.
Kurtzman’s Contract and Potential for a Four-Season Arc
Executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman previously envisioned a four-season arc for the series, mirroring a four-year academy experience for the cadets. News-USA Today reports that Kurtzman’s contract with CBS Studios and Paramount is set to expire this year, adding another layer of uncertainty to the show’s future.
Despite the uncertainty, Landau expressed optimism, stating, “Nothing yet [on if they will or will not get season 2] but we’re just – we’re so happy with season 2, and we can’t wait for everybody to spot it.”
Should the series not be renewed beyond season two, there is a possibility the producers could be granted an opportunity to tie up loose ends, similar to the short “coda” added to the fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery.
Cast Reflections and Season 2 Teasers
Cast members have been sharing their experiences as filming wrapped. Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe) described filming the season 2 finale as “bittersweet,” acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the show’s future. She noted a stronger camaraderie among the cast during the second season.
Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag) teased the season on Instagram, calling it “so wild” and encouraging fans to prepare for a significant step up from season one. He likewise highlighted a larger role for Tig Notaro, reprising her role as Jett Reno from Star Trek: Discovery.
Diané’s video also revealed glimpses of behind-the-scenes footage, including Shepard wearing a new red uniform and George Hawkins (Darem Reymi) sporting a new pin.
What’s Next for ‘Starfleet Academy’?
As of February 28, 2026, a release date for season two has not been announced. The first season finale is scheduled to drop on March 12. The future of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy remains in the hands of Paramount executives, with the fate of the series potentially tied to Kurtzman’s contract negotiations and the evolving streaming landscape.
