Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 Wraps Amidst Uncertainty for Future

Production on the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has officially concluded, leaving fans to speculate about the series’ future beyond its current run. While the first season finale is still weeks away from release, cast and crew members have begun sharing farewells as they complete their work on the season.

Bittersweet Goodbyes on Set

Filming for the 10-episode second season commenced last August, approximately six months after the completion of the first season. In recent days, members of the Starfleet Academy cast have turned to social media to share moments and express their gratitude as they wrapped their individual contributions to the season.

On Sunday, Kerrice Brooks, who portrays SAM, posted on Instagram a photo of a heartfelt embrace with co-star Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe), with Zoë Steiner (Tarima Sadal) applauding the moment. Brooks wrapped filming at 4:00 AM. [News-USA Today]

Bella Shepard shared her own emotional wrap moment on Monday via an Instagram story, expressing her feelings with the message, “Dats a Season 2 wrap on yours truly.” [News-USA Today] Shepard discussed the evolving dynamics among the cast, noting a stronger camaraderie developed over the course of filming both seasons. She reflected on the bittersweet feeling of completing the season without knowing what the future holds, while also expressing pride in the team’s accomplishments.

Other cast members have also posted about wrapping up in the last couple of days, including Gina Yashere (Lura Thok), who departed for Star Trek: The Cruise, and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) and Zoë Steiner (Tarima), who are also aboard the cruise. [News-USA Today]

Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag) announced he wrapped up work recently and shared a longer post revealing the season 2 wrap party is tonight. He posted a video in front of the Star Trek Stage at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada, which also served as the filming location for all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. What’s Next for Starfleet Academy?

Diané’s post acknowledged the rarity of a series receiving a second season, and he commented on the show’s future: “There’s been a lot of chatter online about the future of this show, about what comes next, what might happen, what people predict. And I understand the curiosity. But I think sometimes we forget to honor the present while we’re speculating about tomorrow. Right now, we have TWENTY episodes of a series about the Academy coming to screens. Twenty stories. Twenty hours of this world. Something that will live on and be discovered long after premiere week metrics fade away.” [TrekCore]

The future of the series beyond a second season remains unclear. The second season greenlight was given before recent management changes at Paramount, with the Skydance team bringing new plans for streaming and for Star Trek as a whole. [TrekMovie]

Starfleet Academy executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman has previously discussed a four-season arc for the show, mirroring a four-year stint for the cadets at the titular school. However, Kurtzman’s overall contract with CBS Studios and Paramount expires this year. [TrekMovie] Kurtzman directed the season 2 finale and has stated he plans to meet with Paramount executives after finishing, expressing hope about his future overseeing the Trek TV franchise.

As of February 25, 2026, Paramount has not yet announced release targets for season 4 or season 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which wrapped production in December. [TrekMovie]
