Stefan Tanev and Dorotea Toncheva Celebrate Milestones in Balchik

Bulgarian playwright and poet Stefan Tanev and his wife, actress Dorotea Toncheva, celebrated their 90th and 80th birthdays alongside 50 years of marriage at their home in Balchik. The couple marked these significant personal milestones together on the Bulgarian coast, reflecting on decades of artistic contribution and shared life. Tanev, born in the village of Chervena Voda in the Ruse region, graduated from Sofia University in 1959 with a degree in journalism and later studied dramaturgy at the Moscow Film Institute from 1960 to 1965.

A Storied Literary Career Marked by State Censorship

Tanev built a career as a poet, playwright, and essayist, authoring the four-volume historical saga Bulgarian Chronicles among many other works. His critical and artistic output frequently drew political scrutiny during the communist era. Following the 1968 events in Czechoslovakia, authorities pulled his poetry collection Parapets from printing, and he faced a ban on publishing his poetry until 1976. In 1984, Todor Zhikov personally banned his theatrical production Love Boulevards, leading to Tanev’s dismissal from Sofia Theatre. Despite these restrictions, his poetry has been translated into every European language, as well as Chinese, Mongolian, Arabic, and Hebrew, while his plays have reached more than 200 theaters in Bulgaria and worldwide.

Reflections on Life, Art, and Personal Philosophy

In a reflective interview format detailing his personal preferences and worldview, Tanev shared insights into his daily life and creative motivations. He named compassion as the most honorable virtue and hypocrisy as the vice he despises most, adding that the act of composing literature rescues him from the routine of everyday life. Tanev expressed a preference for living in Finland due to mutual respect among citizens, or alternatively Italy for its cheerful populace. Alongside his literary pursuits, Tanev and Toncheva share three daughters.
