Steve Buscemi Brings Crossword Puzzle Obsession to ‘Elsbeth’ Season 3

CBS’s Elsbeth continues to attract high-profile guest stars, with Steve Buscemi the latest addition to the show’s roster of celebrity killers. Buscemi appeared in the Season 3 episode “Murder Six Across,” portraying Simon Craigie, a competitive crossword puzzle enthusiast driven to murder. The episode aired on March 12, 2026, and is available for streaming on Paramount+.

Buscemi Reached Out to Join the Show

Carrie Preston, who stars as Elsbeth Tascioni, revealed that Buscemi actively sought a role on the series. “I grasp Steve Buscemi is a fan of the show, and when he came on to do our show, he told me that he reached out to his agents and said, ‘Hey, can I be on Elsbeth?’” Preston shared with CinemaBlend. The show’s casting director was then contacted by Buscemi’s representatives, eager to find a part for the actor.

A Fan of the Series

Preston expressed her appreciation for Buscemi’s enthusiasm for the show, noting that it was “really moving” to learn that someone with his extensive career had a genuine interest in being a part of Elsbeth. She added that Buscemi and his wife had watched every episode and were able to discuss the show, which she found “highly flattering.”

On Set Experience

Preston described Buscemi as “great,” “fully ready and prepared,” and “focused” during filming. She as well noted his surprisingly “kind and almost shy” demeanor, contrasting with the often-villainous characters he portrays. “You don’t think about that with the characters that he plays,” Preston said. “He’s played some pretty evil people, and he could not be more opposite that.”

Preston highlighted the quality of the script and Buscemi’s ability to navigate the challenges of the role, describing him as “exquisite to watch.” She and co-star Micaela Diamond were both impressed by the opportunity to work alongside him.

Elsbeth’s Trend of Celebrity Guest Stars

Buscemi’s appearance continues a trend of notable actors taking on the role of murderers on Elsbeth. Nathan Lane previously appeared as an opera lover with a deadly obsession with theatre etiquette in Season 2. The series, which premiered on February 29, 2024, has been renewed for a fourth season and currently airs on CBS on Thursdays.

All three seasons of Elsbeth are currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
