Stranger Things Fuels Massive Marketing Campaign as Final Season Approaches

The highly anticipated final season of Stranger Things is being launched with a massive marketing campaign, heralded last Sunday by a cycling event called “One Last Ride” in Los Angeles, attended by thousands. The series’ iconic imagery of teenagers biking around Hawkins, Indiana, has been freely adopted into the promotional efforts.

Retail chains worldwide have jumped on the bandwagon, offering a wide range of Stranger Things-themed products. From Demogorgon-inspired oatmeal to Hellfire Club backpacks, merchandise is readily available, not just in the US. Netflix marketing director Marian Lee states this is the largest campaign in the video library’s history, dating back to its 1997 origins as a DVD rental service. Target, for example, now boasts over 150 Stranger Things products.

The series’ 1980s setting has also been leveraged by companies. Gatorade has relaunched its Citrus Cooler flavour from that era, and Walmart has brought back Care Bears – a popular franchise encompassing toys, teddy bears, and movies from the decade.

“We’re talking about a series that really resonates on a global level,” Lee explains, and the merchandise reflects that reach. Fans can experience Stranger Things beyond retail, with a Hawkins-themed Christmas market at Galerie Lafayette in Paris and immersive laboratory experiences in cities like San Francisco, new York, Rio de Janeiro, and Sydney.

Netflix is also employing a unique release strategy for the final season. Rather of a conventional full-season drop, episodes will be released in three parts around the holidays. The first episodes premiere this Thursday, November 27th at 2am CET, coinciding with the US Thanksgiving holiday.
