Street Fighter Movie Reaches Theaters With Mixed Reviews and October 16 Release Date

Paramount Pictures brings the foundational video game franchise back to the big screen on October 16, 2026, with a live-action adaptation directed by Kitao Sakurai, /Film reported. The film earns a 5.5 out of 10 rating from /Film, which notes that while the picture features an attractive cast and engaging fight sequences, it ultimately founders on a tonal mess of a script and juvenile humor.

The adaptation opens with a flashback to the 1987 World Warrior Tournament, where a young Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, captures the championship under the watchful eyes of master Gouken, played by Don Lee, and brother-in-martial arts Ken, played by Noah Centineo. This victory nearly costs Ryu his soul as an evil demonic spirit known as the Hado, mastered by the evil Akuma, played by Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, threatens to take him over. These flashback sequences use a Japanese anime style created by studio Titmouse to reference the franchise’s tonal relationship to anime as well as prior animated “Street Fighter” films.

The narrative then jumps forward to 1993, where Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang, recruits fighters worldwide for a new World Warrior Tournament hosted by the evil dictator M. Bison, played by David Dastmalchian. Director Kitao Sakurai maintains a brisk pace during the numerous fight sequences. An early hotel room confrontation between reunited friends Ken and Ryu showcases the nimble choreography of Centineo and Koji.

However, the film’s approach to comedy undercuts its dramatic stakes. /Film reports that gags include Baraka, played by Jason Momoa, scratching his armpits and smelling his fingers, alongside Kyle Mooney playing an Interpol agent whose behavior toward Chun-Li borders on creepy and uncomfortably close to misogyny. Director Sakurai told Polygon that he used animation for flashbacks partly to avoid “something that might be cheesy,” a choice that keeps raw emotions at bay and weakens the audience connection.

The production eventually stumbles during its conclusion by abandoning its primary antagonist for a late-stage twist. This abrupt shift leaves the central conflict unresolved and creates what /Film characterizes as blatant sequel bait.
