Stronger Together: Supporting Self-reliant Journalism in Ukraine

The Stronger Together program – run by WAN-IFRA with partners The National Association of Media Companies (MBL) in Norway and the Association of Independent Regional publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) – has supported 40 Ukrainian media outlets in 2025. It’s done this through funding, training, mentoring, and opportunities for journalists to learn from each other. as the programme nears the end of its first year,independent media across Ukraine are making real progress. Thay’re producing critically important investigative reports, working together more effectively, and showing incredible strength despite the ongoing war.

The programme is finishing up the Women in News (WIN) Ukraine Leadership Accelerator. This has helped 14 journalists improve their leadership, planning, and editorial skills. At the same time, it’s continuing to build media resilience with workshops focused on investigative journalism and programs designed to strengthen newsroom leadership and make organizations more enduring. The investigative teams supported by the programme have now produced over 50 investigative stories in local and regional media in just five months – showing how much these newsrooms are growing and influencing public discussion.

The last few months of the first year included two important events: the Ukraine Media Congress in Lviv and the participation of WIN Ukraine Leadership Accelerator participants in the WAN-IFRA Newsroom Summit in Copenhagen. Both events reinforced the programme’s goal to support independent journalism and encourage collaboration between countries.
