Suspect Arrested for Train Shooting and Cargo Theft in Cajon Pass

Five suspects have been arrested following a two-day search tied to a freight train burglary and a shooting directed at an officer in the Cajon Pass, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The incident began at approximately 6:22 p.m. on August 10, 2026, when Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) officers attempted to intercept individuals allegedly burglarizing railcars along a northbound freight train.

Cajon Pass Train Burglary and Officer Shooting Details

During the initial encounter near Cajon Boulevard and Cleghorn Road, one of the suspects fired a handgun at a BNSF officer from a moving train, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The officer sustained no injuries, and no law enforcement personnel were struck during the gunfire. The train continued north and eventually stopped in the Summit Valley area, between Highway 138 and the 15 Freeway on 3N45 Fire Road, where deputies responded to a secondary emergency location. However, the suspects initially evaded capture at the scene.

Arrests and Seizure of Burglary Tools

Following a two-day manhunt, investigators with the Sheriff’s Department’s Rural Crime Task Force identified 21-year-old Angel Castro as the individual who allegedly fired at the officer. Authorities secured an arrest warrant for Castro, leading to a coordinated operation in the Cajon Pass. Law enforcement intercepted a vehicle carrying Castro and four other individuals, detaining all occupants without incident. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded tools utilized for burglarizing trains, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Suspect Charges and Booking Information

Authorities booked all five suspects into the Central Detention Center, where they remain held in custody. The individuals face specific charges filed by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department:

• Angel Castro: Arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, cargo theft, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
• Jorge Sarmiento Ochoa, Miguel Humberto Grajeda Carrizos, Jesus Jose Grajeda, and Cesar Geovanny Grajeda Medina: Arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, cargo theft, and possession of burglary tools.

All five suspects are identified as Mexican nationals, according to law enforcement records.
