Southern Utah University Empowers Students with Self-Defense Training Through Partnership with Elizabeth Smart Foundation
Southern Utah University (SUU) continues its partnership with the Elizabeth Smart Foundation (ESF) to offer Smart Defense™, a one-credit course designed to equip students with crucial self-defense skills and empower them with confidence. The program, initially adopted by SUU in 2022, marks a significant step in prioritizing student safety and well-being.
A Groundbreaking Collaboration
SUU became the first university to incorporate the Smart Defense™ program into its curriculum, setting a precedent for student safety initiatives across Utah and the wider region . The course is offered through the Department of Kinesiology and Outdoor Recreation.
What is Smart Defense™?
Smart Defense™ is a comprehensive self-defense training program developed by the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, a Utah-based nonprofit dedicated to confronting sexual violence . The curriculum draws from various martial arts styles, including Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, selecting techniques specifically for their effectiveness in real-world scenarios .
However, Smart Defense™ extends beyond physical techniques. The program emphasizes:
- Situational Awareness: Recognizing potential threats and unsafe environments.
- Healthy Boundaries: Understanding and communicating personal boundaries in relationships.
- Verbal Defense: Utilizing assertive communication to deter potential attackers.
Course Details
Students can register for Smart Defense™ (PE 1400) through their mySUU portal. Key course details include:
- Course Number: PE 1400 – Self-Defense (Smart Defense™)
- Credit Hours: 1 Credit Hour
- Format: Five-week training blocks with slight cohorts for personalized instruction.
The Elizabeth Smart Foundation’s Mission
The Elizabeth Smart Foundation was founded by Elizabeth Smart, a survivor of a highly publicized kidnapping and sexual assault in 2002. The foundation’s mission is to bring hope and prevent victimization through prevention, healing, and advocacy . Smart developed the Smart Defense™ program after experiencing another instance of sexual assault in 2019, recognizing the need for accessible self-defense training .
