Russian Drone Jammed Near French Aircraft Carrier in Sweden
Swedish forces intercepted and jammed a suspected Russian drone flying near the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle whereas it was docked in Malmö, Sweden, on Wednesday. The incident, which occurred during a visit for planned NATO exercises, has been confirmed by Swedish authorities as originating from a Russian vessel.
Drone Spotted Near Charles de Gaulle
The drone was detected approximately seven nautical miles (13 km) from the Charles de Gaulle, marking the first time the French carrier has visited Sweden. Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson indicated a “strong link” between the drone and a Russian naval vessel in the Öresund Strait, the waterway between Sweden and Denmark .
Interception and Jamming
The Swedish Navy acted swiftly to jam the drone, disrupting its radio signals and effectively disabling the device. Jamming technology is used to crash or disable drones by interfering with the communication between the drone and its operator . The exact fate of the drone after jamming remains unclear, but the Russian vessel from which it reportedly launched has since sailed on to the Baltic Sea .
Kremlin Denies Involvement
A Kremlin spokesperson dismissed the Swedish claims as “absurd” . But, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as “serious but not unexpected” .
Increased Drone Activity in the Region
This incident is part of a broader pattern of drone sightings near military sites and airports in the Baltic Sea region, including Denmark and other Baltic states . An investigation was launched in December following drone flights over the Île Longue naval base in France, home to the country’s nuclear ballistic submarines .
French Response
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that if Russian involvement is confirmed, it would be a “ridiculous provocation.” He too confirmed that the Charles de Gaulle was not seriously threatened by the drone, as it was neutralized away from the carrier .
NATO Exercises
