Introduction: Challenges and new hopes in neurodegenerative diseases

Table of Contents

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, are global health challenges. As the population ages, the incidence of these diseases continues to rise, placing a heavy burden on patients, families and society. Currently, treatments for these diseases are still limited and mostly focus on alleviating symptoms but fail to halt the progression of the disease. Therefore, it is crucial to find new and more effective treatment strategies. Recently, an encouraging study has given us new hope that sweet orange essential oil may have the potential to reduce neurodegeneration.

Study Reveals: Protective Effects of Sweet Orange essential Oil

This study focuses on the active ingredients in sweet orange essential oil and explores its mechanism of action in neurodegeneration models.Researchers used cell models and animal models to simulate the pathological processes of neurodegenerative diseases, such as oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and protein misfolding.

Cell model experiment: dual effects of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

In cell model experiments, researchers found that sweet orange essential oil can substantially improve the antioxidant capacity of cells and reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Reactive oxygen species are by-products of cell metabolism.Excessive accumulation can cause oxidative stress, damage cell structure and function, and trigger neurodegeneration. Sweet orange essential oil effectively removes reactive oxygen species and protects cells from oxidative damage by activating intracellular antioxidant enzyme systems, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).

In addition, studies have found that sweet orange essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Neurodegenerative diseases are often accompanied by chronic inflammatory responses, and inflammatory factors can further exacerbate neuronal damage. Sweet orange essential oil can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors, such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), thereby reducing the inflammatory response and protecting neurons.

Animal model experiments: improving cognitive function and movement disorders

In order to verify the protective effect of sweet orange essential oil in the body, researchers conducted animal model experiments. They used drugs or genetic engineering methods to build animal models that simulate Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In these models, animals exhibit symptoms such as cognitive dysfunction and motor impairment.

Research results show that after animals were given sweet orange essential oil, their cognitive functions and motor abilities were significantly improved. For example, in an Alzheimer’s disease model, animals treated with sweet orange essential oil performed significantly better in a maze test than untreated controls, indicating improved spatial learning and memory abilities. In a model of parkinson’s disease, animals treated with sweet orange essential oil also experienced improvements in motor coordination and balance.

Discussion on the mechanism of action: multi-target regulation

The researchers further explored the mechanism of action of sweet orange essential oil. They found that sweet orange essential oil not only has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but also modulates multiple signaling pathways related to neurodegeneration. For example, sweet orange essential oil can activate the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is an important neurotrophic factor that can promote the survival, growth and differentiation of neurons and is essential for maintaining cognitive function. In addition, sweet orange essential oil can inhibit protein misfolding and aggregation. Protein misfolding is a common feature of neurodegenerative diseases. Misfolded proteins can form aggregates and impair neuronal function.

Compositional analysis of sweet orange essential oil: contribution of active ingredients

The main components of sweet orange essential oil include limonene, β-myrcene and α-pinene. Research suggests that these components may collectively be involved in the protective effects of sweet orange essential oil. For example, limonene is a monoterpene that has antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and neuroprotective effects. Beta-myrcene also has a
