Farallon Islands Open Ocean Swim Completion
San Francisco marathon swimmer Breed completed a treacherous 30-mile open ocean journey from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge in 2025, according to a report by Patch. Breed crossed the finish line in 13 hours, 54 minutes, and 23 seconds, becoming the seventh person and the third woman in the world to complete the grueling route.
Breed moves from pool to open-water swimming
Breed first joined San Francisco’s Dolphin Club in 2016, where cold water temperatures, powerful ocean tides, and a community of experienced athletes pulled her away from pool competitions and into open-water exploration, Patch reported. That same year, the Marathon Swimmers Federation nominated her for Solo Swim of the Year following a 21-mile crossing of Lake Tahoe completed in 8 hours, 56 minutes, and 16 seconds. Over the following years, her marathon resume expanded to include the English Channel, the North Channel, Monterey Bay, and Lake Del Valle in Livermore.
