California Coastal Waters Claim Swimmers in Separate Tragedies Amid Dangerous Surf
The ocean is unforgiving, you know. And right now, especially with the large tidal movements. And right now we have a pretty good-sized northwest swell. The rocks are very slippery. The swell is very powerful. And just to be careful and know you know your limitations, Big Sur Fire Chief Matt Harris said after emergency responders pulled a deceased swimmer from the rocks at Sand Dollar Beach.
According to ksbw.com, an intensive search-and-recovery operation along a rocky portion of the Big Sur coast in California ended after a swimmer went missing in the water and was discovered on the rocks. Big Sur Fire Chief Matt Harris stated that the individual was reported missing at Sand Dollar Beach just past 1 p.m. Emergency crews searched for about 20 minutes before locating the victim on the rocks. ksbw.com also reported that multiple agencies responded, including the US Coast Guard, which sent a helicopter to assist with scanning the coastline. Lifesaving efforts—including immediate CPR administered after rescuers pulled the man from the rocks—proved unsuccessful in saving him. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Pacific Surf Conditions and Family Tributes in Los Angeles
Further south along the California coast, another fatal incident unfolded in Playa del Rey. The tragedy unfolded around 8:18 a.m. Sunday when Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to the 6900 block of Pacific Avenue following reports of a swimmer in distress. Los Angeles County lifeguards desperately attempted to revive Goode, performing CPR after he was pulled from the water, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials confirmed to The California Post. Authorities stated that no foul play was suspected.
Returning to the site of the disaster, Verline Celestine broadcasted a poignant video highlighting the turbulent waves where her brother lost his life. Close to Lifeguard Tower 42, Celestine voiced her astonishment that Goode had entered the perilous waves despite his inability to swim. Displaying a picture of a temporary beach memorial set up for Goode, she showed where his name was traced in the sand amidst candles and hand-drawn hearts.
Coastal Infrastructure Damage and Weather Impacts
The deadly incidents occurred as Southern California’s coastline was battered by massive waves and dangerous weather conditions linked to the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel. Yahoo reported that fierce waves in Long Beach tore through wooden planks on the historic waterfront boardwalk, forcing seawater through the compromised structure ahead of the high tide on Saturday night. By Saturday evening, access to the boardwalk had been cut off, with officials erecting no trespassing signs to deter people from the hazardous environment. Mayor Rex Richardson reported that eight buildings along the city’s Peninsula received red tags declaring them unsafe for entry, while an additional building was issued a yellow tag, permitting residents restricted entry solely to collect personal belongings.

First responders warned beachgoers to be especially careful along the Central California coast, where powerful ocean swells, slippery rocks, and significant tidal movements create dangerous conditions. Authorities advised individuals to evaluate ocean conditions prior to entering the sea and to remain mindful of the dangers presented by strong waves.
