Syrskyi announces decision to leave post of Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Ukraine

Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has announced his decision to step down from his position. This decision comes after a period of intense fighting and strategic reassessment in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Syrskyi revealed his decision on his Facebook page on February 8, 2024. He stated that the need for a change in approach and fresh perspectives led to this challenging decision. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and the opportunity to lead the Ukrainian armed forces during a critical period.

The decision follows recent reports of growing dissatisfaction with Syrskyi’s leadership, notably regarding his strategic decisions in the face of Russian offensives. Concerns were raised about his handling of the defense of Avdiivka, which Ukrainian forces ultimately withdrew from in mid-February. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2024/02/17/7438444/

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has nominated Colonel-General Anatolii Barhylevych to replace Syrskyi as the new Commander-in-Chief. Barhylevych previously served as the head of the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine. https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2024/02/8/7437489/
