T-Mobile launched the eSIM transfer function this week. As the name suggests, this is the ability to transfer the phone number linked to the built-in eSIM in one phone to another device. Until now, it was always necessary to generate a QR code for transmission.
According to the operator’s information, only about 3% of customers in its network use an eSIM card in their device, which is a surprisingly low proportion and corresponds to the number of approximately 200,000 people. However, the number of eSIM users is slowly increasing, so the operator decided to make it easier for them to transfer their number when changing devices.
The service is currently available at T-Mobil for selected devices with the Android 15 operating system and later, in the future it will also be extended to iPhones with iOS and iPads with mobile data connectivity and iPadOS. This transfer omits the previously necessary generation of the activation QR code at the store or in the My T-Mobile application. Both the phone number and the active tariff remain preserved during the eSIM transfer.
The process can be started on the new phone to which you want to transfer the eSIM in the Settings section. Customers can also transfer a physical SIM card from the original phone, which is always transferred to the destination phone as an eSIM. The transfer can also be done during the initial setup of the phone when it is activated for the first time.
For the transfer to be successful, both devices must be close to each other and connected to the Internet (ideally on the same Wi-Fi network). The source phone must have an active security feature in the form of a screen lock. The customer will receive confirmation of a successful eSIM transfer in the form of a notification. In the Czech Republic, eSIM transfer for selected phones has been supported by Vodafone since last August, O2 does not yet offer this function.
