The Täby Half Marathon is expanding its athletic footprint by launching a brand-new full marathon in 2027, aiming to draw 1,500 runners in its inaugural year and eventually challenge the Stockholm Marathon for dominance in Sweden. Organizers at the Täby athletic club, Täby IS, announced the ambitious plans as the third edition of the half marathon prepares to launch on October 18, drawing over 3,000 runners alongside participants in the Lilla Täbymaran from its start and finish line at Näsby Slott.
Surging Demand for Global and Local Marathons
The new marathon arrives amid a massive running boom sweeping Sweden and the rest of the world. Major international races in London, New York, and Berlin sell out faster than ever, forcing cities like Copenhagen to implement ticket lotteries where over 80,000 runners registered for a chance to secure a spot for the 2027 events. Stockholm is experiencing the exact same trend as participation rates climb steadily following the post-pandemic return of mass-participation sports.
Stockholm Marathon filled all 25,000 of its slots by November of last year for its late spring event. The 2027 race reached full capacity as early as August, prompting organizers to release extra slots in September that sold out instantly.
Why Täby IS Is Launching a New Swedish Marathon
Securing a spot in Sweden’s capital race has become remarkably difficult, creating a supply bottleneck for thousands of runners eager to race over 42.195 kilometers. Nils-Göran Nilsson Batz of Täby IS highlighted the motivation behind the upcoming 2027 event.
“Getting hold of starting places for the Stockholm Marathon will soon be just as difficult as in Berlin and London,” Nilsson Batz said. “This means that many who want to run a marathon in the capital will not be given the opportunity, just as it looks on the continent. Therefore, we want to provide an alternative at a time of year that is also significantly better for running faster times.”
The newly announced Täby Marathon officially opened registration on Wednesday. The organizing club envisions gathering a combined 10,000 runners across its marathon and half-marathon events during the same weekend, positioning the event as the second-largest marathon in Sweden behind Stockholm.
