Taiwan has expressed a positive reception to teh recent telephone conversation between U.S.President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. the call, which Trump described as “excellent,” occured on Wednesday, February 4th, and was met with approval from Taiwanese officials who believe it could contribute to regional stabilization amidst escalating tensions.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with AFP, Taiwanese Deputy Foreign Minister chen Ming-chi stated, “We are not overly concerned about this telephone interaction. In fact, we believe it will help stabilize the situation, especially as China continues to exacerbate tensions in the Taiwan Strait and throughout the region.” This sentiment reflects Taiwan’s hope that continued dialogue between the U.S. and china will de-escalate the increasing military pressure exerted by China on the island, which Beijing claims as its own.

According to reports from China’s Xinhua news agency, Xi Jinping conveyed to Trump during the call that bilateral disagreements could be resolved through “mutual respect.” However, he also cautioned the United States to proceed with “exercise caution” regarding arms sales to Taiwan. This reiterates china’s long-standing opposition to U.S. military support for the self-governed island.

Following the conversation, Trump affirmed the strength of the U.S.-China relationship and his personal rapport with Xi Jinping in a post on his Truth Social network. He characterized both as “extremely good.”

Chen Ming-chi further emphasized Taiwan’s welcoming stance, stating, “I think we welcome this type of effort to stabilize the security situation in this region.” The island’s government views consistent communication between Washington and Beijing as a crucial factor in maintaining peace and preventing further escalation in the sensitive Taiwan Strait.
