Taiwan Threatens Legal Action Against 19 Entertainers Over China’s National Day Posts
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced on October 1, 2026, that it has identified approximately 19 Taiwanese entertainers who published social media posts celebrating the People’s Republic of China’s 77th National Day. MAC Deputy Minister and Spokesperson Liang Wen-gey stated during a regular press conference that the government will investigate and take legal action against any artist whose public statements or actions cross two specific red lines: promoting armed attacks against Taiwan or advocating for the elimination of the sovereignty of the Republic of China.
CCTV Includes Taiwanese Celebrities in National Day Program
State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) included several Taiwanese public figures in its “China Dream, Hometown Love” National Day special program lineup. Actress Michelle Chen (陈妍希) and actor Chang Chen-kuang (张晨光) appeared on the official roster. Chen participated in a chorus performance of “My Motherland” alongside mainland artists and recorded a promotional video at the Great Wall wearing red, during which she referred to China as her “motherland.” Chang participated in a micro-story dramatic unit.
Beyond scheduled broadcast appearances, multiple Taiwanese celebrities shared pre-approved congratulatory templates on Weibo. Liang noted that these recurring participants frequently copy official broadcasting templates wishing the “motherland” a happy birthday, enduring prosperity, and peace.
MAC Establishes Two Non-Negotiable Political Red Lines
During the press briefing, Liang acknowledged the complex professional pressures Taiwanese performers face while working in the mainland market. However, the council drew a sharp distinction between routine commercial engagement and explicit political compliance that threatens Taiwan’s constitutional order. The government confirmed it will actively investigate performers whose online messaging crosses the threshold of advocating armed force against Taiwan or promoting the eradication of ROC sovereignty.
