Tarik Skubal Emotiional Return to Detroit in Dodgers’ Win Over Tigers

Tarik Skubal made his emotional return to Comerica Park on August 28, 2026, pitching six strong innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The left-hander struck out seven batters without walking anyone, allowing just one run on four hits in his first appearance in Detroit since being traded ahead of the deadline.

An Emotional Welcome in Detroit

Skubal wiped tears from his face and pulled a towel over his neck as the Detroit crowd gave him a standing ovation during a pregame tribute video. Drafted by the Tigers in 2018 out of Seattle University, Skubal spent seven years in the organization and won two American League Cy Young Awards before his blockbuster departure.

“There were definitely tears,” Skubal said. “Luckily enough, I was able to make it to the tunnel before more happened.”

When the game started, the reception shifted. Audible boos—mixed with cheers of “Skooooob”—echoed through the ballpark as the reigning Cy Young winner took the mound in road gray.

“With the last name Skub, you don’t know if they are boos or if they’re cheering for you,” Skubal joked. “So, I’m going to assume they were cheering for me.”

Dominant Performance on the Mound

Once the game began, Skubal quickly locked in. After giving up a leadoff double to Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first inning, the left-hander retired his next 12 straight batters.

The Tigers finally broke through in the fifth inning. Eduardo Valencia doubled up the left-field line, and Max Clark drove him in with a two-out triple to put Detroit on the board.

Manager Dave Roberts pulled Skubal after 83 pitches, mindful of his heavy workload in previous outings. Skubal relied heavily on a sharp changeup that baffled his former teammates, inducing six whiffs and five strikeouts on the pitch.

Decisive Late-Inning Run

The Dodgers capitalized on tight pitching to secure the win. Freddie Freeman drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning single, snapping Los Angeles’ three-game losing streak and raising their record to 81-54.

“He left everything he had for this organization, multiple Cy Youngs, he left it all for them,” Freeman said regarding Skubal’s legacy in Detroit. “I’m sure during the game they weren’t too thrilled with all the strikeouts he was racking up, but it’s hard to boo a man who gave you everything he had every five days.”

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch noted that the high-stakes matchup was heavy for everyone involved. Hinch acknowledged that the reunion needed to happen so both the team and the fanbase could turn the page.
