Prague, Czech Republic – As the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2026 get underway, athletes are expressing their enthusiasm for the competition venue, highlighting both the energy of the host city and innovative features like LED barriers and thoughtful athlete gifts. Competitors are finding a balance between adapting to a slightly smaller ice surface and enjoying the enthusiastic support of local fans.
LED Barriers Enhance Spectator Experience
One notable aspect of the arena is the installation of LED barriers, which have captured the attention of skaters. According to Natalia Taschler, the barriers add a dynamic element to the competition. “Bomb! As soon as we arrived on Monday and looked at the hotel and the arena, it injected energy into our veins. I am proud of the union and the volunteers for what they managed to organize. The ice rink is a little smaller, so in training we tried where we could take more, where we could take less, so as not to break the beautiful LED barrier,” she stated. Taschler revealed a unique gift designed by a fellow skater’s sister: oversized sweatshirts intended as a practical and appreciated memento. “We get some gifts at every race, so I offered to help with that so we could prepare something that the kids they won’t throw it away and will use it when the production costs something. So I designed such oversize sweatshirts,” she explained. The gesture resonated with other competitors, including Spanish representative Olivia Smart, who recognized the design aesthetic.
Adapting to the Venue
The ice rink’s slightly smaller size presents a minor adjustment for some skaters. Taschler emphasized the importance of utilizing practice time to acclimate. “If we couldn’t try it and had to go to the race right away, it might be unpleasant, but this way we have the opportunity to get a sense for it in training. That’s why we tried the rhythmic dance to test it and then try some elements from the free ride, because we will only have the next trainings in the next hall.”
Positive Momentum Following Olympic Performance
Coming off successful performances at the European Championships (10th place) and the Olympics (15th place), Taschler feels confident heading into the World Championships. She attributes this to a strong preparation process and a supportive coaching team. “We probably feel the best in our lives. The whole preparation was divine, after the last practice we hugged, we cried and went to the coaches to advise them that we are very grateful for how they are guiding us along this path and showing us a new way of preparation.”
Strong Fan Support and Local Connections
Taschler is looking forward to performing in front of a supportive crowd, including friends, family, and new connections made within the Czech Olympic team. She also highlighted the appeal of Prague as a host city, recommending local cafes like Kus Koláč. “On Friday and Saturday, there should be a lot of people who will see us ride live for the first time. Classmate from high school, friend from camp… We are very grateful that we can bring the whole family, friends, and new friends we made in Milan from the Czech Olympic team.”
