Residents of Latvia aged 65 and older can now access free educational classes covering financial literacy, English language skills, health services, and labor market preparation through a newly launched program in Riga. The charitable organization Tavi draugi introduced the initiative, titled “Zināšanu spēks” or “The Power of Knowledge,” to expand lifelong learning opportunities and help older adults remain active in social and professional spheres.
Program Structure and Curriculum Focus
The “Zināšanu spēks” curriculum is divided into six distinct thematic areas designed to address practical everyday tasks alongside personal and social skill development. According to Tavi draugi, the program covers financial literacy, labor market skills, communication and improvisation, social activity and an active lifestyle, health literacy, and continuous education and intellectual development.
Within these blocks, financial literacy classes help participants manage personal finances, while health modules focus on better management of medical issues and self-care. The final educational block introduces English language instruction alongside professional skills development, aiming to provide elderly participants with concrete tools to maintain or enhance their activity in the modern job market.
Schedule, Location, and Registration Details
The first class, focusing on financial literacy, is scheduled for October 5 at NVO nams located on Ieriku Street in Riga. Following the launch, organizers plan to hold future sessions regularly at least twice a week. By August 2027, the program aims to deliver a total of 80 classes for participants, creating an active community where attendees can exchange experiences, meet new residents, and expand their public engagement.

Registration for the free classes is open to residents of Latvia over 65. The project receives funding from the European Social Fund Plus, supported by state budget co-financing.
