Faith Spencer: Bridging Cybersecurity Expertise with Community Entrepreneurship
Faith Spencer embodies a rare blend of technical prowess and community dedication. As an Enterprise Technology Consultant at West Monroe Partners, she delivers technology solutions to corporate clients. Simultaneously, she serves as the Founder, President, and CEO of Ironworkz, a nonprofit business incubator focused on empowering underserved communities in Northwest Indiana.
From Gary, Indiana to Purdue Polytechnic
Spencer’s journey began in Gary, Indiana, where early experiences fostered both her entrepreneurial spirit and her passion for technology. Growing up, she assisted at her father’s auto collision center and even ran a small sandwich business in elementary school. This early exposure to business laid the groundwork for her future endeavors. Her initial spark for technology came with the first-generation Apple iPhone.
Spencer pursued a double major in Cybersecurity and Network Engineering Technology at Purdue Polytechnic, graduating in 2023. She credits Purdue with providing the hands-on skills crucial for her career. “College day one, I was hands-on—and at work day one, I was hands-on. The skills directly transferred,” Spencer stated in a Purdue Polytechnic alumni profile Purdue Polytechnic. She as well highlighted the importance of the university’s labs in preparing her for the industry, noting she was “industry ready day one.”
Her time at Purdue wasn’t solely focused on academics. Spencer participated in cultural experiences through Purdue Polytechnic and the Black Cultural Center, and was a member of the Purdue marching band, playing the bass drum. She also found a mentor in Professor Nicole Hands, who provided valuable insights into the IT industry.
Corporate Consulting and the Pursuit of Equity
Spencer’s path to West Monroe Partners began through a connection made while working at Purdue’s IT infrastructure services. An internship led to a full-time position at the firm’s Chicago headquarters LinkedIn. As a consultant, her work involves client projects, migrations, and developing presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences. She also travels to client sites as needed.
Yet, Spencer’s ambition extends beyond the corporate world. Recognizing a lack of representation and support for aspiring entrepreneurs from under-resourced communities, she co-founded Ironworkz in December 2022 with Alex Termini and Emmani Ellis Ironworkz. The organization, rooted in the industrial heritage of Gary, Indiana, aims to bridge the equity gaps that hinder entrepreneurial success.
Ironworkz: Empowering the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs
Ironworkz provides resources, knowledge, and a supportive environment for first-time business owners, side hustlers, and emerging entrepreneurs. Spencer’s motivation for creating Ironworkz stemmed from her own experiences competing in pitch competitions, where she often found herself as the only person of color on stage. “Ironworkz was my way of, one, giving back to my community, but two, showing others opportunities. You’re never too young to start a business,” she explained.
The organization’s mission is to equip under-resourced communities with the tools to build sustainable, thriving enterprises, driving community revitalization and economic growth. Ironworkz envisions a region where every ambitious individual has equitable access to entrepreneurial opportunities.
