AI Powers the Next Generation of Humanoid Robots: Figure AI Secures $675 Million Investment
The convergence of artificial intelligence and robotics is accelerating, with Figure AI, a startup developing general-purpose humanoid robots, securing $675 million in venture capital. The funding round, announced in February 2024, includes investments from prominent tech giants such as OpenAI, Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and Microsoft, signaling a strong belief in the future of human-like robots in various industries.
Figure AI: Building the Future of Humanoid Robotics
Founded in 2022, Figure AI aims to create humanoid robots capable of performing tasks currently done by humans, particularly in roles experiencing labor shortages. Their initial robot, Figure 01, is designed for commercial applications in sectors like manufacturing, shipping, logistics, warehousing, and retail. The company explicitly states its robots are not intended for military or defense purposes. Figure envisions a future where “millions, billions maybe” of humanoids are deployed in workplaces and homes.
OpenAI’s Role: Fusing AI with Robotics
A key component of Figure AI’s strategy is integrating advanced AI systems into its robots. OpenAI is partnering with Figure to develop specialized AI models tailored for humanoid robot functionality. This collaboration will leverage OpenAI’s existing technologies, including GPT language models, DALL-E (image generation), and Sora (video generation), to enable the robots to “process and reason from language” and accelerate their commercial deployment. The partnership aims to explore new possibilities for how robots can assist in everyday life.
Investment Details and Valuation
The $675 million funding round values Figure AI at $2.6 billion. Jeff Bezos contributed $100 million through his firm Explore Investments LLC, while Microsoft invested $95 million. Nvidia and an Amazon-affiliated fund each provided $50 million. OpenAI invested $5 million. Other investors include Intel’s venture capital arm, LG Innotek, Samsung’s investment group, Parkway Venture Capital, Align Ventures, ARK Venture Fund, Aliya Capital Partners, and Tamarack.
Early Applications and Competition
Figure AI has already secured a partnership with BMW to potentially deploy robots at its Spartanburg, South Carolina car plant, though specific implementation details are still being determined. The company demonstrated Figure 01 performing basic tasks, such as picking up and placing a crate on a conveyor belt. Figure AI faces competition from other companies in the humanoid robotics space, including Amazon-backed Agility Robotics, Tesla (Optimus), and Boston Dynamics.
Looking Ahead
The substantial investment in Figure AI and its partnership with OpenAI highlight the growing momentum behind humanoid robotics. As AI technology continues to advance, these robots have the potential to address labor shortages and automate tasks across a wide range of industries, reshaping the future of work.
