Singapore – Isaac Ng, an 18-year-old navigating life with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and the lasting effects of childhood meningoencephalitis, recently experienced a dream come true thanks to Make-A-Wish Singapore. Early Health Battles and Adapting to Communication
At just five months old, Isaac was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis, a severe inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membranes. While he recovered, the illness left him with permanent hearing loss, requiring him to use hearing aids. The condition also caused speech delays, necessitating speech therapy and auditory-verbal therapy.
Despite attending a mainstream primary school, Isaac didn’t begin speaking in full sentences until he was 10 years old. Prior to that, he primarily communicated through text messages, a testament to his early adoption of technology as a bridge to connection. “It was difficult to talk to people because I wasn’t able to communicate extremely well back then, as I could communicate only with simple words and, at best, a short sentence,” he told The Straits Times.

In addition to the effects of meningoencephalitis, Isaac lives with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a condition causing painful inflammation in his wrists. This makes everyday tasks, such as writing, particularly challenging.
