Netflix Cancels ‘Terminator Zero’ After One Season
Netflix has canceled its animated Terminator series, Terminator Zero, after just one season. The show’s creator, Mattson Tomlin, confirmed the cancellation on social media, citing insufficient viewership despite positive critical reception. The news comes roughly two years after the series premiered on August 29, 2024.
The Premise and Production
Terminator Zero is a science fiction action anime series set in the Terminator universe created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. The first season, comprised of eight episodes, focused on events surrounding Judgment Day – August 29, 1997, as established in Terminator 2 – and its aftermath, extending into the year 2022. The story centers on Malcolm Lee, a developer of an AI system named Kokoro, who finds himself targeted by a robot assassin on the eve of Judgment Day. He is protected by a soldier sent from the future.
Animation services were provided by Production I.G, with direction from Masashi Kudō. The series featured the voices of André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, Sumalee Montano, Armani Jackson, Gideon Adlon, Carter Rockwood, Rosario Dawson, and Timothy Olyphant.
Cancellation Explained
Tomlin explained the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it.” He expressed regret that he wouldn’t be able to deliver on planned future seasons, which would have explored the “Future War” he had envisioned. He also acknowledged the efforts of the marketing team and the hundreds of individuals who contributed to the show’s production.
Tomlin further elaborated on the challenges of attracting both anime and Terminator audiences, noting that the show “asked them to meet in the middle, and they didn’t in the way the corporation needed to justify the spend to continue.”

The cancellation was officially confirmed in February 2026, according to reports from multiple entertainment news outlets. Deadline, Engadget, and a Reddit post all reported on the show’s demise.
