Tesla’s September Surge Captures One-Third of German EV Market
Germany’s electric vehicle market reached a significant milestone in September 2026, recording 88,599 new registrations. This figure represents a 34,5% share of the total automotive market. Data from iAuto.lv confirms that Tesla dominated the month, with the Model Y and Model 3 claiming the top two spots in the registration rankings.
The Mechanics of Quarterly Volatility
Tesla’s performance remains tied to a distinct delivery and registration cadence. The manufacturer frequently orchestrates a massive surge in numbers toward the end of each quarter, a strategy that inevitably leads to a lull at the start of the next. The volatility is stark: after sliding to 15th place in the German market during August, the brand rebounded sharply in September to reclaim the lead.
Model Y and Model 3 Lead Segment Growth
The Model Y cleared the 8,000-unit threshold in September, while the Model 3 followed with 4,512 registrations. Both vehicles posted massive year-over-year growth—260% for the Model Y and 285% for the Model 3. These figures cemented Tesla’s control over both the SUV and mid-size vehicle segments. Conversely, while Volvo’s EX30 saw a rapid rise in registrations, Volkswagen’s ID.3 and ID.7 models struggled, recording a decline in volume throughout the month.
Cumulative Leadership: The Škoda Challenge
Despite the September dominance, the year-to-date leaderboard tells a different story. Over the first nine months of 2026, the Škoda Elroq holds the top spot with 30,845 registrations. The Tesla Model Y trails closely behind with 29,464 units, while the Volkswagen ID.3 rounds out the top three with 24,352 registrations.

The Final Quarter Battle
The race for the 2026 annual title is now a narrow contest between Škoda and Tesla. Whether the Škoda Elroq can withstand a year-end delivery push from Tesla remains the central question for the final quarter. Meanwhile, the long-term impact of the recent sales dip within Volkswagen’s ID series on its 2026 market position is not yet clear.
