Tesla Discontinues Full self-Driving Purchase, Shifts to Subscription Model
Tesla has announced the discontinuation of the full purchase option for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, transitioning to a subscription-based model exclusively. This change, revealed by CEO Elon musk, marks a importent shift in how Tesla customers access advanced driver-assistance features.
Previously, customers could choose between a one-time payment of $8,000 for lifetime access to FSD or opt for a monthly subscription costing $99. Now, the upfront purchase is no longer available, compelling all users to utilize the subscription service. this move aligns with a growing trend within the automotive industry, where software-driven features are increasingly offered through recurring subscription fees.
Several automakers, including BMW, have experimented with similar strategies, offering features like heated seats as subscription add-ons. While this approach has faced criticism, it allows consumers to sample features without a ample initial investment.
Despite the name,Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system does not deliver fully autonomous driving. Drivers are still required to remain attentive and prepared to take control of the vehicle at any moment. The subscription model provides a flexible alternative, allowing drivers to evaluate the system’s benefits before committing to a long-term expense. This approach offers a potentially beneficial solution for consumers who want to experience the technology without the significant financial burden of a one-time purchase.
