Tesla Unveils Cybercab: The Steering-Wheel-Free Robotaxi

Tesla has officially scheduled the launch event for its highly anticipated Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas, according to filings and invitations reported by Motor1.com. The two-seat vehicle features neither a steering wheel nor pedals, marking a major escalation in the company’s bet on fully autonomous transport.

Vehicle Design and Specifications

Because the cabin lacks manual controls, human occupants have no physical way to intervene if the system encounters an unexpected traffic scenario.

The vehicle lacks side-view mirrors and a rear window, relying exclusively on cameras and sensors for visibility. Inside, the minimalist dashboard houses a single central touchscreen similar to the displays found in the Model 3 and Model Y.

Launch Event Details and Production Targets

Tesla scheduled the formal product unveiling event in Austin, with invitations going out to select riders, fans, and contest winners, according to Motor1.com. Attendance is strictly controlled, requiring guests to be at least 21 years old and pass ID checks at the door.

Regulatory approval remains a primary hurdle. Because the Cybercab does not include a steering wheel or pedals, federal and local safety regulators must clear the vehicle design before Tesla can legally sell or operate uncrewed versions for the general public on public roads. Current testing includes employee rides that began in July 2026, serving as a precursor to wider commercial availability, according to Motor1.com.
