Thai Marines Rescue Malnourished wildlife from Cambodian Casino Amidst Border Conflict

Bangkok, Thailand – December 26, 2025 – Thai military personnel have successfully rescued several malnourished wild animals from a casino located within a contested border region of Cambodia, as ongoing clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces continue. The rescued animals – including a lion, a lioness, a Malayan bear, and two Asiatic black bears – have been transported to specialized wildlife breeding centers within thailand, according to a statement released by the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

The operation took place at the Thmor Dar casino, which Thai officials report was utilized as a military stronghold by Cambodian forces. The casino was captured by Thai marines on sunday following renewed fighting along the border.

The resumption of hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia began on Friday, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions stemming from armed clashes that initially erupted in early December. These recent conflicts represent a breakdown of a ceasefire agreement established five months prior.

The condition of the rescued animals underscores concerns regarding wildlife welfare within the region, notably in areas impacted by armed conflict and illegal activities. Thai authorities have indicated they will provide complete care and rehabilitation to the animals, with the long-term goal of returning them to suitable habitats whenever feasible.

The situation remains fluid as diplomatic negotiations continue in an attempt to restore peace and stability to the Thailand-Cambodia border region. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
