“The Furious” Set to Unleash Intense Action This May
Lionsgate is poised to release The Furious, a Hong Kong action film generating significant buzz for its brutal fight choreography and stellar cast. The film, directed by Kenji Tanigaki, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 29th.
Plot and Cast
The Furious centers on Wang Wei (Xie Miao), a father driven to desperate measures after his daughter is kidnapped by an international organized crime group. When the police prove unhelpful, Wei embarks on a relentless quest to rescue her. He finds an unlikely ally in Navin (Joe Taslim), a journalist grappling with secrets of his own, whose wife has as well mysteriously disappeared. Together, they navigate a dangerous criminal underworld.
The cast boasts a lineup of prominent action stars, including Xie Miao, known for his roles in The Recent Legend of Shaolin and My Father Is a Hero, and Joe Taslim, recognized for his work in The Raid films and as Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat. Also featured are Indonesian action star Yayan Ruhian, also from The Raid films, and Thai actress Yanin Vismitananda (Europe Raiders, Triple Threat).
Director’s Legacy
While The Furious marks only Kenji Tanigaki’s third directorial effort, he is a highly respected figure in Hong Kong cinema. Tanigaki has a long and distinguished career as a stunt coordinator and fight choreographer, with credits including Flash Point, Hidden Man, Raging Fire, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, and even the Hollywood production Blade II.
Critical Reception and Festival Acclaim
The Furious premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as part of the Midnight Madness sidebar, where it received overwhelmingly positive feedback. It was a runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at TIFF. Following its successful debut, Lionsgate acquired the worldwide rights to the film (excluding China, Hong Kong, and Macao).
