Nestled on the banks of the Kiltha River in Castlemartyr, County Cork, The Hunted Hog is more than just a pub; it’s a cornerstone of the local community and a destination with a rich history. Recently acquired by Castlemartyr Resort, the pub continues to welcome locals and visitors alike, maintaining its charm and traditional atmosphere.

A History Rooted in Legend

The pub’s name originates from a 15th-century legend of a wild boar that terrorized the people of Castlemartyr. The beast, reportedly weighing 600 pounds, was a danger to both people and livestock. A member of the Fitzgerald family is credited with slaying the boar, bringing peace back to the village. A stone marking the event, etched with a boar and a cross, can still be found at the old Ballyoughtera churchyard.

From Pat Shortt to Castlemartyr Resort

Previously owned by Irish comedian and actor Pat Shortt, The Hunted Hog has long been a popular spot. Castlemartyr Resort purchased the pub in December 2021, ensuring its future viability and planning to enhance the experience while preserving its character. Brendan Comerford, General Manager of Castlemartyr Resort, stated the resort aims to create a pub experience on par with its own high standards, offering guests a genuine East Cork experience.

A Hub for Community and Celebrations

The Hunted Hog is known for its warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and vibrant social scene. Locals gather to discuss GAA, rugby, and current events, while others enjoy a quiet moment with a newspaper. The pub is particularly popular for post-wedding celebrations, providing a venue for guests to continue the festivities. A marquee erected until November provides a dedicated space for parties.

Famous Faces and Legendary Nights

Over the years, The Hunted Hog has hosted a number of famous visitors. During Pat Shortt’s ownership, the pub welcomed Westlife, Michael Flatley, Tommy Tiernan, Sinéad O’Connor, Brad Pitt, and Beyoncé. Legend has it that The Beatles stopped at the pub in the 1960s when their tour van broke down en route to the ferry in Rosslare. Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band also frequented the pub after a concert in Cork, even taking to the stage for an impromptu session.

A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Current manager Barry Hennessey, who previously worked at Castlemartyr Resort for 13 years and Jacko’s pub in Ballinacurra, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the pub’s unique vibe. He believes the welcoming atmosphere is something special to Ireland and highly appreciated by American visitors. The Hunted Hog also actively supports the local community, hosting charity events for organizations like Marymount.

The Hunted Hog offers a full menu alongside its selection of drinks, and provides a cozy setting with an open fire. The pub opens daily from 1pm, offering food, drink, and a warm welcome to all.
