Taylor Sheridan’s Move to NBCUniversal: What It Means for the Future of His ‘Yellowstone’ Universe

Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind the wildly popular Yellowstone and its expanding universe of spin-offs, has officially made the jump to NBCUniversal, leaving Paramount behind. This move, finalized in late 2025, stems from creative and financial disagreements with Paramount’s new leadership following its merger with Skydance Media. Here’s a breakdown of the reasons behind the departure and what it means for the future of Sheridan’s projects.

The Clash with Paramount Leadership

The shift to NBCUniversal, reportedly a five-year deal worth $1 billion, wasn’t a sudden decision. It followed mounting tensions between Sheridan and David Ellison, the CEO of Paramount Skydance, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and The Hollywood Reporter. Ellison, an ally of former President Donald Trump, reportedly proposed a series tied to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, a concept Sheridan resisted, stating he didn’t desire to create something “too politically charged.”

Sheridan has publicly maintained an apolitical stance, telling the New York Times he aims to portray all sides of the political spectrum in his work. However, the vision for a politically focused anniversary series clashed with his creative direction.

Budgetary Disputes and Creative Control

Beyond the political disagreements, financial concerns also played a significant role. Paramount’s new leadership began questioning the budgets for Sheridan’s existing shows, including the spy thriller Lioness, starring Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana. These budgetary concerns, coupled with a perceived lack of respect for his projects, fueled Sheridan’s desire to seek a new home.

The situation was further complicated by a dispute over Nicole Kidman’s casting. Paramount allegedly cast Kidman in a separate series, Discretion, without consulting Sheridan, potentially creating scheduling conflicts and leading him to experience his projects weren’t being prioritized. Paramount also rejected one of Sheridan’s film scripts, adding to the growing rift.

What Happens to the ‘Yellowstone’ Universe?

Sheridan’s departure leaves the future of several Yellowstone spin-offs in question. Currently in development at Paramount are Landman, Lioness, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, a Tulsa King spin-off titled NOLA King starring Samuel L. Jackson, and four additional Yellowstone spin-offs: Dutton Ranch, The Madison, 1944, and Y: Marshals.

While the existing shows will likely continue, their creative direction may shift without Sheridan’s direct involvement. The extent of his continued involvement in these projects remains unclear, but Paramount has indicated they intend to move forward with the spin-offs. The Madison is scheduled to be available on Paramount+ on March 14, 2026.

Sheridan’s Future at NBCUniversal

Under his new deal with NBCUniversal, Sheridan will begin creating new shows in 2029. He expressed a desire for greater creative freedom, stating, “I spent the first 37 years of my life compromising,” suggesting NBCUniversal offered a more supportive environment for his vision.

This move marks a significant shift in the television landscape, as one of the industry’s most successful creators seeks a new path for his storytelling.
