# New Year’s Weather: A Frigid Start for Many, Warmth in the West
Americans in many parts of the country will begin 2026 with freezing temperatures, heavy snow or potentially heavy rain, depending on where they live.
The weather forecast for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day shows another wave of lake-effect snow hitting the Great Lakes and parts of the Northeast, after a powerful winter storm system brought snowdrifts and strong winds to both regions, and are available in parts of the Midwest, in the days after Christmas.Simultaneously occurring, wet weather is moving into California to ring in the new year and will make its way to the Northwest later this week.
It will be freezing in the north and east, forecasters say, with temperatures expected to be 10 to 20 degrees below average for this time of year in those regions. in the west the weather will be warmer than average, with temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees higher than average.
Lake effect snow
Lake-effect snowfall continued to accumulate Wednesday in areas downwind of the Great Lakes, with parts of western New York and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula recording the highest totals. And there’s more to come: Some locations could receive between 1 and 3 feet of snow by New Year’s Day, including places that have already been hit by recent winter storms which has brought up to 2 feet of snow in the last 48 hours.

This was announced by the National Meteorological Service Lake effect snow warnings for a number of towns and cities in northern Ohio, New York state and western Pennsylvania, which will remain in effect through Thursday. The Albany Weather Bureau warned that conditions could prevent travel,especially because they could change unexpectedly.
“During lake-effect snow, weather may vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather a few miles away. Visibility may also vary greatly,” the NWS Albany office wrote in a message accompanying its latest advisory. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility and road conditions.”
The cold front approaches the east coast
Colder air is settling over the East Coast as the space prepares for yet another cold front expected to move in over the next few days, CBS Information meteorologist Nikki Nolan said.
