Russian State Ballet Captivates Hanoi with Timeless Classics
Hanoi audiences are being treated to the artistry of the Russian State Ballet with performances of “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Nutcracker” at the Ho Guom Opera through March 27, 2026. The company, founded in 1981 by Soviet People’s Artist Vyacheslav Gordeev, is known for its dedication to the Russian classical ballet tradition and has performed in over 40 countries worldwide.
On Wednesday, March 25th, the Russian State Ballet collaborated for the first time with the Hanoi Symphony Orchestra to present “The Nutcracker,” set to the iconic music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky . The performance aims to transport viewers into a magical fairytale world, showcasing the imagination and signature movements of classical Russian ballet.
A Tale as Old as Time: “Romeo and Juliet”
Alongside “The Nutcracker,” the Russian State Ballet is too presenting “Romeo and Juliet,” a ballet adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragic love story. The production features Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic score and blends powerful physical expression with grand staging to convey the emotional intensity of the tale .
“The Nutcracker”: A Christmas Eve Dream
“The Nutcracker,” which premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on December 18, 1892, is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s fairytale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” . The ballet follows a magical adventure that begins in a child’s room on Christmas Eve and unfolds into a fantastical kingdom. It remains one of the most frequently performed ballets globally.
The Russian State Ballet: A Legacy of Excellence
The Russian State Ballet brings together young talents from top academies, often selling out performances wherever they appear. Artistic director Vyacheslav Gordeev has introduced standout performers for this Vietnam tour, including Viktor Davydov, Ustiuzhaninova S, Oksana Gasnikova, and Dmitry Kotermin . The company previously performed “Swan Lake” in Hanoi in April 2025, receiving strong appreciation from both audiences and critics .
