Kelvin Thengono’s “Tide of Calm” at Opulent Living 2025: A Sanctuary of Movement and Stillness
Jakarta, Indonesia – The Royal Suite at Opulent Living 2025, designed by Kelvin Thengono of K-Thengono Studio, offers a meditative experience inspired by the ocean’s duality. The design, titled “Tide of Calm,” explores the interplay between the sea’s energetic surface and its serene depths, creating a space for rest, reconnection, and quiet contemplation.
A Design Inspired by the Ocean’s Rhythm
The suite, encompassing 85 square meters, is structured around a sequence of spaces – a bedroom, walk-in closet, open bathroom, leisure area, and foyer – all enveloped in semi-transparent woven mesh. This design element mimics the undulating curves of waves, fostering a sense of gentle movement and encouraging visitors to slow down and appreciate subtle shifts in light and space. K-Thengono Studio aimed to create a retreat where visitors could reclaim moments of quietude.
Luxury Through Thoughtful Materiality and Craftsmanship
Thengono curated a selection of designer pieces that complement, rather than dominate, the architecture. Furniture from Casa Italia, including the Calligaris Ginza Sofa, echoes the suite’s fluid lines. The Lago Vele bed in the bedroom creates a sense of lightness, mirroring the feeling of floating above the sea. Pieces from MOIE were chosen for their alignment with the philosophy of “quiet luxury.” The Poliform walk-in closet and wall system provide a refined backdrop, while a sculptural Tom Dixon lamp adds a distinctive glow.
The Contemplative Bathroom Experience
The open bathroom is designed as a particularly contemplative space, interpreting the exhibition’s theme of “Embarking on a Design Odyssey” through gentle rhythms and calm horizons. Outfitted with sanitary wares by GROHE SPA, the bathroom is designed to feel like a quiet voyage, with materials allowed to breathe and transitions feeling unforced. The brushed hard graphite finish of the GROHE SPA fixtures complements the dark wood tones and smooth marble floors, emphasizing that true luxury lies in nuance.
Illumination and Collaboration
Lighting, in collaboration with Erreluce, plays a crucial role in shaping the suite’s emotional landscape. A choreography of soft illumination, subtle highlights, and gentle shadows creates a cocooning stillness while drawing the eye to the layered materials and sculptural contours.
