The Seattle Mariners unveiled a bronze statue of Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki outside T-Mobile Park on April 10, 2026, following months of collaboration between the team, Suzuki, and sculptor Lou Cella.

The statue depicts Suzuki in his iconic batting stance wearing his 2001 rookie uniform, a choice made to reflect his early impact with the franchise when he won AL MVP and Rookie of the Year while helping Seattle win a record 116 games that season.

During the unveiling, the bat attached to the statue snapped at the handle and tilted backward as the tarp was removed, prompting laughter from attendees including Ken Griffey Jr. And Edgar Martinez, who were present for the event.

Suzuki later joked through interpreter Alan Turner that he didn’t suppose Mariano Rivera would reach out and break the bat, referencing his longtime rivalry with the former Yankees closer.

The Mariners shared an altered graphic of the bobblehead giveaway for the first 40,000 fans that night, showing the bat in its snapped position, and updated the Ichiro replica statue giveaway accordingly.

Cella, of Rotblatt Amrany Fine Art Studio in Chicago, said he worked closely with Suzuki and the team to ensure accuracy, noting Suzuki wore the 2001 jersey as a reference during the sculpting process.

The statue began as a welded metal armature, evolved through clay modeling and multiple moldings, and was cast in bronze before being shipped from Illinois to Seattle for installation on a stone monument.

Suzuki, who retired as a Mariner in 2019 after playing for the Marlins and Mets later in his career, joins Griffey and Martinez as one of the franchise’s most beloved icons immortalized at T-Mobile Park.

What caused the bat to bend during the statue unveiling?

The bat snapped at the handle when the tarp was removed, causing it to tilt backward toward Suzuki’s head instead of remaining upright in his trademark pose.

Who helped create the Ichiro Suzuki statue?

Sculptor Lou Cella of Rotblatt Amrany Fine Art Studio in Chicago collaborated with the Seattle Mariners and Ichiro Suzuki over several months to design and produce the bronze statue.
