Table of Contents
Farmers Alley Theater’s production of A Very Kalamazoo Christmas continues through December 21st. This review is by WMUK’s Gordon Bolar.
A Familiar Plot, Hilariously Subverted
The story centers around a young, successful, unmarried woman with a corporate job who returns to her small hometown just before Christmas. Her mission? to rediscover love and the simple holiday joys she left behind.
Sound familiar? It should. The plot intentionally mirrors the predictable storylines and characters commonly found in Hallmark Christmas movies. Though, A Very Kalamazoo Christmas doesn’t aim to replicate the genre; it brilliantly parodies it.
Director Kevin Theis’s Inspired Approach
Recognizing the potential for sentimentality, Director Kevin Theis embraces an over-the-top style, reminiscent of The Carol Burnett Show. This approach is key to the play’s success.
key Elements of the Parody
- Direct Address: actors frequently break the fourth wall, speaking to each other and the audience.
- Exaggerated Performances: Melodramatic expressions, exaggerated emotions, and stone-faced reactions amplify the comedic effect.
- Cartoonish Elements: Props are frequently enough deliberately unrealistic, adding to the playful atmosphere.
- Physical Comedy: Slapstick and physical schtick further emphasize the parody.
These techniques constantly remind the audience that they are watching a parody, allowing them to laugh at the genre while simultaneously enjoying its inherent charm.
A Sparkling Production
The sparkle in this production isn’t just in the decorations; it’s in the clever writing and the cast’s commitment to the comedic timing. A very Kalamazoo Christmas is a delightful and refreshing take on a holiday staple.
